Anthony Fauci: A Lifetime in Public Health

Early Life and Career

Anthony Stephen Fauci was born in Brooklyn, New York, on December 24, 1940. His father, Stephen Fauci, was a pharmacist who owned a pharmacy in the neighborhood. His mother, Eugenia Fauci, was a housewife.

Fauci attended Regis High School in Manhattan, where he excelled in science and math. He went on to study at the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, Massachusetts, where he earned a bachelor's degree in classics in 1962.

After graduating from college, Fauci attended Cornell University Medical College, where he earned his M.D. degree in 1966. He completed his residency in internal medicine at New York Hospital-Cornell Medical Center.

Director of NIAID

In 1984, Fauci was appointed Director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), a part of the National Institutes of Health. He has served in this role for over 30 years.

During his tenure at NIAID, Fauci has overseen research to prevent, diagnose, and treat infectious diseases, including HIV/AIDS, malaria, and tuberculosis. He has also been a leading voice in the fight against COVID-19.

Adviser to Presidents

Fauci has advised seven Presidents on HIV/AIDS and many other domestic and global health issues. He is considered one of the world's leading experts on infectious diseases.

Fauci has been honored with numerous awards for his work, including the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2008. He is a member of the National Academy of Sciences and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
